“Sonic the Hedgehog” springs into theaters three weeks from today, and ever since the titular character’s redesign was revealed in the New Official Trailer, the film has generated a far more positive reception than first expected. Two standout pieces of promotional material have been released, containing new footage of the Blue Blur himself.
WARNING – SPOILERS BELOW
In an official clip from the film, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) joins Tom (played by James Marsden) on a road trip after apparently trying and failing to go it alone. Seems Sonic’s fear of water and inability to swim survived the translation from the games to the big screen. As a childhood fan of the Fastest Thing Alive, this makes me very happy and even more excited.
The film also has a catchy new song in its soundtrack: “Speed Me Up” by Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Yachty, and Sueco the Child. The music video and song proper are sprinkled with references to the Sonic series, including shout-outs to Sonic’s friends Tails and Knuckles. The music video also shows off more shots from the film, notably Sonic facing off against Dr. Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey).
Sonic’s redesign shines in both media. His big, expressive eyes complement his energetic movements and voice in the preview clip, and he just looks so cool in the brief battle imagery in the music video. Here’s hoping that the complete film will make this Valentine’s Day an enjoyable one.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” releases on February 14, 2020 and is rated PG for action, some violence, rude humor, and brief mild language.
